Plastic surgery is a lot more accepted now than it was 20 or 30 years ago. Women proudly flaunt their new breasts after breast augmentation or tell friends about their excitement for a facelift. It is okay to talk about plastic surgery, even those procedures that might not get mentioned as often. Today let’s take a quick look at a popular, but not often discussed procedure: the labiaplasty. While this surgery might enhance your “private” areas, that doesn’t mean we can’t answer some questions out in the open.

What is a Labiaplasty?

Whether your labia are too large, your clitoral hood too bulky, or your mons pubis loose and deflated, labiaplasty can help. This surgical procedure is designed to enhance and rejuvenate the female genitalia. It is customized to your specific needs and desires for this intimate area. Dr. Sato will work closely with you to create a custom surgical plan for your body.

Some popular modifications during a labiaplasty include:

  • Labial Reduction – When labia are naturally large or become stretched out from pregnancy and childbirth, labia reduction can remedy the problem and restore your confidence, with and without clothing. This procedure reduces the size of either the labia minora, labia majora, or both. This procedure is often done on female athletes that experience discomfort during running or cycling and on those that want to rejuvenate the appearance of their genitals.
  • Clitoral Hood Reduction – In some women the clitoral hood has excess skin which is removed during a clitoral hood reduction. This procedure is performed both to increase sexual pleasure and to improve the appearance of the clitoris.
  • Mons Pubis/ Labial Fat Grafting – As the body ages the fat stores in the mons pubis and labia can decrease leading to sagging and loose skin. Fat grafting moves fat from other areas of the body to the mons pubis or labia restoring a youthful appearance to the area. This procedure can also increase sexual comfort since decreased fat stores can lead to discomfort during intercourse.

Why Would I Want a Labiaplasty?

Every woman’s reason for wanting a labiaplasty is a bit different. You may choose to have the procedure to increase the aesthetic appearance of your genitalia, to enhance your sexual experiences, or to reverse age related changes to the area.

What Does Recovery Feel Like?

After labiaplasty you’ll likely need to abstain from your regular activities for a few days while you heal. Since every procedure is different, recovery times will vary. In general plan on taking a few days to a week off from work. You’ll get specific recovery instructions for your surgery from Dr. Sato. You’ll also be asked to abstain from sexual activity, exercise, and tampons for a few weeks after surgery.
