On the BlogAre Breast Implants in Teens Recommended?

When teenage patients first come to our offices to discuss breast augmentation, one of the first questions they often ask is, “Are breast implants recommended for teens?” There is no simple yes or no answer to this question. Sometimes breast augmentation is the right choice for a teenage patient, while other times, waiting is preferred. It really depends on the situation and the teen in question.

Are There Underlying Physical Deformities?

Surgery to correct physical deformities is a big reason behind many teenage breast augmentations. Poland’s Syndrome and asymmetry are two wonderful reasons for teens to consider breast implants, in some cases even before they turn 18. Correcting these physical deformities can help teens to develop a healthier sense of self confidence and to love their newly developed adult bodies. Waiting can lead to embarrassment and negative feelings about their bodies, which, in some cases, linger throughout adulthood.

Correction for some physical deformities may be covered by insurance, especially while the teen remains on their parent’s policy. Having surgery now instead of later can be a big cost savings for some patients.

Why Breast Augmentation?

Some teens feel that a larger chest will transform their lives. They imagine that they’ll come out of surgery and become instantly popular. This is not a good reason for breast augmentation. Teenage patients need to understand that breast augmentation isn’t a way to escape their problems and that it won’t change everything about their lives. A healthy perspective on breast augmentation and what results are likely to occur is important.

Saline or Silicone?

A big question for teens considering breast augmentation is, “Saline or silicone?” Saline implants are FDA approved for cosmetic use in patients 18 and older. Silicone implants aren’t recommended for use until at least 22. Both implant types can yield stunning results, but if a teen patient is dead set on silicone, they might want to wait a couple of years for their implants.

Is a Mammogram Required for Teen Breast Augmentation?

Some breast augmentation patients are encouraged to get a mammogram before surgery, just to make sure there’s no sign of breast cancer before placing the implants. Teen patients are often exempted from this recommendation (unless there’s a very strong family history of breast cancer) due to the very low incidence of breast cancer in the teens. Overall, teens make excellent breast augmentation patients due to their good health and tight skin.
