What is Blepharoplasty?

By Dr. Sato

If the eyes are the window to the soul, then your eyelids are the frames. Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that can help improve the look of your eyelids. The term comes from the Greek word “blepharon,” meaning “eyelid,” and “plassein,” meaning to form. This surgery can change the form of your eyelids making you look younger, more energetic, less fatigued and more attractive. Schedule your appointment with Dr. Sato and find out if blepharoplasty is right for you.

Blepharoplasty- Understanding the Procedure

Blepharoplasty is a general term used to describe eyelid surgery. The specifics of your surgery will depend on the results you’re seeking and your anatomy. The primary goal of surgery is to increase the attractiveness of the eyelid area while retaining a natural look. Surgery can be performed on the upper and lower lids. Fat removal may be performed on the upper or lower eyelid to open the eye. Depending on what the patient needs, fat grafting may be used to fill in hollows surrounding the eye. Blepharoplasty is typically performed under IV sedation with a local anesthetic to eliminate pain during surgery.

Many Asian patients choose blepharoplasty to create a more pronounced upper eyelid crease (double eyelids). This procedure is sometimes called Asian blepharoplasty.

During surgery muscles are tightened and excess skin and fat are removed. Any necessary incisions are typically made along creases in the eye to camouflage any scarring.

Is Blepharoplasty Right for Me?

This procedure has both cosmetic and functional applications. Aesthetically, it can dramatically improve the look of the eye area. Often, drooping eyelids can make the face appear tired or fatigued. The surgery corrects drooping, sagging, excess skin, etc. For some patients this can restore peripheral vision that has diminished due to blockage from a drooping eyelid.

When you meet with Dr. Sato for your blepharoplasty consultation, she will carefully determine if you are a good candidate for the surgery. Both your medical history and your eyes will be carefully analyzed. If other procedures are needed (like a facelift, skin rejuvenation, etc.), Dr. Sato may offer recommendations. Talk with her about your overall aesthetic goals so she can help you to achieve them.

What’s Recovery Like?

Many patients have questions about recovery from blepharoplasty. Typically patients take about a week off from work and are encouraged to avoid strenuous activities until they are fully healed (1-2 weeks). You may experience a bit of tearing or dryness of the eye as you heal; this is completely normal. Ice packs during the first 24 hours and elevating the head can reduce your swelling.

Open your eyes to new, beautiful possibilities with eyelid surgery. For many men and women, blepharoplasty is the key to a more attractive, more rejuvenated face. Give us a call at 713-791-0700 today to schedule your consultation with Dr. Sato.
